This section is designed to identify and bring to light conduct on the part of nurse managers and nursing administration that, in our view, reflects a failure to treat nurses with respect and/or to abide by our contract. We have had an overwhelming response in favor of these postings when we have included them with our communications. Therefore, we have decided to make this a regular column for our website. It is important for each nurse to know what is being done to fellow bargaining unit members.
3.6.08 - Maggie Hickey, nurse manager Labor and Delivery, recently went into a staff meeting and started to berate nurses who had filled out a staffing concern form. She challenged the reasons why the nurses chose to fill out the form. The nurses informed her that in their opinion the situation was unsafe and dangerous for the patients and staff. The staff responded immediately and called the union to inform them of her behavior. The union in turn called senior nursing leadership and basically asked if this is what supporting the nurses looks like? Maggie Hickey returned to the unit and apologized for any miscommunication that had occurred. We strongly oppose any efforts to discourage nurses from filling out legitimate staffing concern forms or to penalize in any way those who do.
